1771 Elizabeth Lane, a descendant of the Pollards, lived in Baldon House for 30 years until her death in 1771. She was concerned by the state of the poor in the Parish and she made provision in her will ‘to establish a School for learning to read Six Poor Boys and Six Poor Girls of March Baldon’.
1873 A new school room was built to create more space following the 1870 Education Act making Elementary Education available for all.
1897 Another classroom was added to the school.
1920 Toot Baldon School closed and the 29 children came to Marsh Baldon making 72 on roll.
1929 All children over 11 were sent to the Senior School at Dorchester and Marsh Baldon School became an Infant and Junior school with fewer than 40 children on roll.
1945 School dinners started.
1949 The school’s paraffin lamps were replaced by electric light. A school canteen built.
1953 The school changed from ‘Voluntary School’ to ‘Controlled School’ status. The Infant Room was enlarged and an office/staff room added.
1960 Children from Nuneham Courtenay started attending.
1983 The school became a one teacher school with only 14 children (the older Juniors going to Garsington) and was under threat of closure. A new staff cloakroom was built.
1986 The number of children on roll increased to 30.
1986 The School House was sold and the proceeds from the sale were invested and form the permanent capital of the Elizabeth Lane School Foundation.
1991 The Elizabeth Lane Room was built in the playground.
2002 The front garden was turned into an Early Years Outside Learning Space.
2004 Work begins on a new bigger staffroom built at the side of school and a new office for the headteacher and school secretary built in the playground (the old staffroom turned into storage space and the school office into a library).
2004 Work begins to create a new school playing field (from a field leased from Queen’s College behind the school).
2005 A fire which started as a result of work being done on the school leaves the two old classrooms gutted. Luckily all the new building work is saved. The staff and children are hosted by the Global Retreat Centre for 2 weeks while 3 Portacabins are put onto the new school playing field.
2006 The staff and children move back into the rebuilt premises. The LEA agrees to fund a new school hall.
2008 A new school hall, built behind the Elizabeth Lane Room, is completed.
