Toot Baldon – John de Scaccario - Provided by John Wright
By contrast with the long De la Mare family connection with the Manor of Marsh Baldon, the Manor of Toot Baldon appears to have changed hands fairly frequently subsequent to the Norman Conquest.
In 1255 a knight by the name of John de Scaccario held one third of the Manor. He was distinguished as a crusader, and it is reported that because of this he was permitted to bring an action against Clement the Shepherd of Baldon before the Abbot of Dorchester instead of the ordinary court.
Unfortunately for John, taking the cross and getting kitted out as a Crusader cost more than he supposed, so he borrowed from the moneylender Jacob, son of Moses, on the strength of his estates in Baldon and Begbroke. Disappointingly, we do not know how this finished up as nothing further is recorded until the end of the 15th century.
